The end of hell week

Today ends hell week, thank goodness. This is the one week that I absolutely hate each year. This is the week of all the orientations for work. It all begins on Saturday with staff orientation. After a long day of sitting and listening to my boss talk about absolute nonsense we then have the parent orientations. These are preceded by the making of the children packets that take forever to do and then is the meetings with the parents. Yes, the lovely people that you stare at and say ” Why in God’s name did they let you have a child?”. Now that they are all over it is time to get the camps ready and set for the first day of camp.

Stress is relieved, now bring on the drugs for the summer.

So today was interesting

So today I got to work a little later then usual. I had my last final today and finished today. I got to work and found out that today we were checking in the arts and crafts order that had come in. Now some of the orders that we get in usually take about an hour or two to check in but this order is huge and is only half in. This half takes up two pallets. So myself, my weekend boss, my regular boss, the head of the adult classes and the director went down to the loading dock to move the order into the rec room so that we could check it in. We had one of the labor guys help move the pallets into the room for us so that we did not have to do that. As time goes on all of a sudden the director disappears and then my regular boss disappears and then comes back. I will say even though we did this in pieces we were able to get a pallet and a half done today. We’re going to have to do the last half pallet tomorrow, more fun stuff.

It is good sometimes to have several hands working together, sometimes not.

Sorry that i haven’t talked in a while

I’m sorry that I haven’t been around for the last couple of weeks. I have been doing a lot of stuff and haven’t been able to write. So I have the next person that I’m going to at work. You may remember him from a previous blog that I wrote. My director made a very big mistake lasts week. Let me tell you the story.

We have a new intern in the office, a really nice person. He was going to show her the way we do things in the front office. I happened to be out in the front office during this and he was giving someone a permit to take pictures in the park that I work in on the weekend. Before the guy walked out I asked him if he had made copies of the paper work for the office manager. He said no and called the guy back over. The guy handed him back just the receipt with no permit. I asked my director what happened to the permit and he said that the receipt was all that he gave him. I took the book that we write all of the permits in and started correcting what he had done. I pulled out the permit sheet and showed him that this was the sheet that he needed. He then said that the guy that he didn’t need it, with which I immediately said yes he did. I guess he didn’t like that because after I finished correcting his mistake he yelled AT&T me that I should NEVER correct him in front of the public again. Well he got his because the office manager later yelled at him because he over booked the time slot and had to call the guy to say that he made another mistake.

Sometimes karma catches up with people quicker then you think.

And the winner of this weeks award is

This week I figured I would give you a little bit of an over view of the office that we have.  Our office is set up so that you can hear just about everyone, no matter where you are in the building.  The front office is the first office that you see.  This is directly across from the door that leads to my boss’ office.  His office is the only one, besides the main office, that you can get into without being buzzed into the back.  Sharing the office with my boss, divided by a glass barrier, is my weekend boss.  In the next office are our Community Rec. and Aquatics Rec. Supervisors.  The following office belongs to the loud mouth of the office.  This is the office that everyone tries to avoid like a plague.  The last office down this hallway belongs to the Senior Rec. Supervisor and the Director.  That is the end of that hallway, unless you want to go out onto the roof which we do have a door to do that.

The other hallway is just as long but with fewer offices.  The Deputy Commissioner’s, Aborist’s, and Maintanence Director’s office is the first one (yes they all share the office) and there is one secretary.  The next office is the Commissioner’s office.  That is it.  Not many people down on this end.

Now you see why when people get on my nerves the main reason is because we are all so close to each other.

Take my advise, get plenty of space between you and your co-worker, when ever you can.

So who should I talk about today … I know!!

So sitting at the reception desk at work today I was trying to decide whom I should write about today, and then it hit me.  There is one person in the entire office that no one likes that would be the perfect subject for this next blog.

This woman is despised by most of the people in this office.  When you here the voice in the morning, you know that it’s going to be a bad day.  There is no getting away from it.  Don’t be caught doing anything that you should not be or doing it the wrong way cause you will get yelled at from here to Timbuktu.  As you can probably guess I have had numerous encounters with the woman.  Let me tell you of one of these that I had about two years ago.

We had just gotten a new registration system for the department do that people could register for our classes online.  The system crashed on the first night of registration so we had to move the walk-in registration day to the following day.  It was on this day that I had my issue.  I had been in the back office for most of the day registering people.  I had come out to the front office to grab a receipt that I had printed.  At that moment I was asked 4 questions and to answer a phone call.  After doing all of this I slammed the phone down, a little annoyed and walked out passed her.  As I’m passing her in the doorway she says “Isn’t anyone going to say something to him?” , mind you that she has done this numerous times.  I walked in the back, where I had been, and after the person that was back there left, I announced to my director and my weekend boss that I was ready to kill her cause of what was just said and the thing that she had said the day prior.

Why can’t people just be normal.

I thought that throughout this week I would give you some treats.

I thought that since I’m working full days this week by giving you some more blogs about the people that I work with.

This blog is dedicated to my commissioner.  He will be retiring at the end of this month.  He does in fact deserve this retirement.  He has worked for the department for the last 35 years.  He first started out as a recreation assistant and moved up through the ranks until he finally became commissioner last year.  He is a very nice man that would do anything possible to help you out.  Although he may not always see eye to eye with you he does have ideas to make the plans better and more workable.  There is something about the way that he runs the department that makes you stand there in awe of what he is able to do.  The only question that we now have is who is going to replace him.  Everyone says that it should be his deputy, another nice guy.  The only problem with that is that his deputy has no clue about certain things.  Thems the breaks sometimes.  There is going to be some kind struggle coming up over the next several weeks.

This should be an interesting time.

So this week’s Person to Talk About at Work is….

So this week I’m going to tell you about my direct boss.  He is the kind of guy that if you have to much of him at one time you want to kill yourself.  Yes I know, everyone had a boss like that but that is why everyone can relate.  Everyone has that one boss that is absolutely annoying and you just want to throw something at.  Mine is that kind.  I have worked for him for close to 10 years now (but it feels more like 100).  I have done everything that one could possibly do in an office environment but it never seems to be enough sometimes.

Sa la vie.

It’s almost that time of year …. again

So it is almost that time of year.  The time of year where I get to sit and listen to people vie for jobs as summer camp counselors.  This is the time of year that I hate going into work.  I have to sit and listen to three main groups of people.  The first is the group of people that we had volunteering in our camps the previous year, we call the C.I.T.s.  Now these are usually the 16 year olds that are looking for their first paid job.  Most of them are great at the interview because they know exactly what it is that we are looking for them to do and how to answer, however there are the few that I just can’t stand because they are just annoying and they have no clue what it is that is right and wrong, but here is the kicker, we hire them anyway.  My boss, who will probably be the subject of my Friday blog this week, has this thing that if you volunteer for us you are assured a position the following year (or when you turn 16).  This has both good and bad points to it.  The good point is that you volunteer for a summer you get a job the next, the bad is that we have some lazy C.I.T.s that just don’t deserve to get the job and they do anyway.  This is where I have a problem with this practice.  I was once one of these people but, unlike some of them, I actually didn’t need to be a C.I.T., I interviewed with people that didn’t know that I was a C.I.T. and they thought that I was amazing.  So anyway the next group of people is the older group that work for the Board of Ed. and are just looking for some summer work to get some extra cash.  These people are probably just as bad, or if not worse, then the C.I.T.s.  They mostly think that because they have day to day contact with the kind of children that we have in our camps that they can best be suited for the position and thus should be hired on the spot.  Yes I know you may know these people in your own life and know the feeling.  Well I have news for you, they are as bad as you think.  I see them every year and every year it gets worse and worse.  I even had one of the Arts & Crafts Specialists that we have told one of her friends that I would hire her.  Now let me just put this out there, I IN NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM HAVE THE DIRECT AUTHORITY TO HIRE ANYONE.  Believe me that if I did some of the people that we do hire would definitely not have been.  Anyway these are those people that you just can’t stand.  Most of them are great and we hire them but most of them aren’t and we put them on the dreaded WAITING LIST.  Yes we have a waiting list and sometimes we do in fact call people off of it, it doesn’t always happen but sometimes it does.  The last group of people are the people that they only experience that they have with children  is either they have kids or that they once was a child.  These are the worst people to possibly interview.  They have no clue how to answer the questions that you are asking them.  They can not put together 1 and 2 and get 3.  Some of these people have actually lied on their application to get the job.  We had one women a couple of years ago apply.  One of the first questions on the application is have you been CONVICTED of a felony.  Now felonies range from grand theft auto to murder and vary slightly from state to state.  On the application she stated No.  Now a common thing that my boss will do is go through the application at the beginning of the interview and just ask some general questions from it.  With this woman he said “So I see you have not been convicted of any crimes.”  Now the normal response is to nod your head in agreement or make some kind of gesture that this is in fact correct.  She did not.  So my boss looked at her and said “Is there something wrong?”  In reply she stated “Well that is not necessarily true.”  (It is at this point that I would like to point out that we do have a director that works over the summer at one of our camps that was convicted of petty larson, another kind of felony.)  She then stated “Well I have been convicted of a felony.”  Now she has stated that she has lied on her application, already not a good thing.  So my boss questioned her “What, may I ask, was the nature of the crime?”  The following statement put the whole world into stunned silence, “Child neglect.”  You heard right folks the woman confessed that she was convicted of child neglect, another way of saying CHILD ABUSE.  Well, according to state and federal law, once you have began the interview process of a convicted felon, you are not allowed to just end the interview, you must continue and conclude at a later point in the interview process.  So my boss continued to ask several more questions and then told her that we would have to look into her situation before letting her know if she was to work for us or not.  I guess you can figure out what we ended up doing.  Don’t call us, we won’t call you.  Now you see why I’m not a fan of this time of year.

All I have to say now is, I can only hope that this year is better then last year.

It’s the end of another week

So it’s the end of another week.  IT IS FINALLY THE WEEKEND!!!!!!!!!!!!  This is the first week that I’m back at work with the “regular” hours that I have.  I’m glad that I have the job and that I have hours but I really do wish that some of the people that I work with just weren’t there.  For instance, let’s take my direct boss.  As everyone else’s boss he can get on my nerves sometimes.  As I have said before, he can be quite annoying.  Anyway he is not the only one.  There are quite a few people at work that can be annoying, and a few that are actually really nice people.  I think that over the next few of these blogs I’ll introduce you to them and let you decide for yourself if they are as annoying as I think or if they are normal and I’m the crazy one (which is very possible).

I hope that the people I work with are the crazy ones.

Ok, this is my week so far

Ok, this is how my week has gone so far.  I have tried to get work done that should have been done last week.  I have tried to get the pictures of my 5k up and that hasn’t been working out so well.  I have also tried to get ahead of the game and do some work ahead of time.  So far none of this has worked out for me.  And here is the sad part.  The highlight of my week has been having to do quick sketches of a naked man for my art class.  Yes you heard me correct, the highlight of my week has been seeing a naked man and having to sketch him.  Fortunately I did not have to sketch the whole anatomy of the human body just enough to give you the idea that it is a person.  Yup this has been my week of wonderfulness.

I’m just praying that the weekend gets here fast.
